I found this A-Maze-ing aerial view photograph of the corn maze at Ort Farms in Long Valley, NJ, by Joyce Bambach in the Chester Observer-Tribune and it forced me to make a confession to you, dear readers…London, Maddie, Rex and I have never gone into a corn maze. When I see a photo like this one, I get more than a little bit intimidated….visions of Stephen King’s “Children of the Corn” dance in my head and I envision the National Guard coming out to search for our family of four.
Maybe 2008 will be our year. The photo caused me to check out the Orts Farm web site and consider a Fall visit. While they haven’t updated the site since Fall 2007, here’s what I can tell you:
Ort Farms is a family owned farm located in Long Valley, New Jersey. The Ort family works hard all four seasons to bring their customers the best quality. Seasonally, Ort Farms offers seasonal products, plants, fruits and vegetables.
The Ort’s farm is open 7 days a week from 9 am to 7 pm. Great green John Deere tractors pull haywagons of pumpkin pickers out to the U-Pik pumpkin patch all day long. Groups are accomodated in the morning and individuals after 2 pm during the week. Weekends the Ort Farm stays open until 7 pm. The kids love hanging out with the animals — pigs, goats, lambs, a calf, chicks, ducks, and a donkey. The Orts sell all types of apples and cider grown by local farmers, but do not grow orchard fruit themselves. They sell refreshments, though, including locally made cider. Pumpkins are 55 cents per pound.
In the Fall, Ort Farms proudly presents:
- Pumpkin Picking
- Corn Maze
- Freshly Baked Pies
- Petting Zoo
- Local Fresh Apples and Cider
- Apple and Pumpkin Butter
- Jams and Jellies
- Hay Bails and Corn Stalks
- Class Trips and Birthday Parties (Weekdays Only)
